Want to know the “real life” behind building a home? Having your kitchen counter sit on your dining room floor for three months. Y’all…this life ain’t always glamorous behind the scenes but with time, we are making some serious progress! We finally got our kitchen bar top installed complete with shiplap and corbels 🙌🏼
I’m sure you’re wondering why in the heck it took us so long to put this thing on. Well, the shiplap had to be installed first and then I had to find corbels that weren’t just cute but also really sturdy and supportive. I knew I wanted to accent this high-top bar with shiplap because um…who doesn’t love those classic white boards that Joanna Gaines made famous in a matter of minutes?!
Thinking practically, I also really wanted shiplap here because I knew that when people would sit here their feet would be hitting up against that wall (not on purpose, I’m sure!) and I didn’t want do mess up any drywall. Shiplap is going to withstand all of the kicks and bumps throughout the years.
We used tongue and groove shiplap from Lowe’s and painted it the same color as our trim. Nothing says “farmhouse” like some good ole white shiplap. Next up? The support corbels. As much as I would’ve loved to have used antique corbels like we used in our living room (here), we needed something a lot more sturdy and practical to actually hold up our countertop from any weight that goes onto it.
I found these corbels at a local shop that were solid wood and made to look a bit older with the distressed paint….the perfect combo! Let me just mention, they were $15 each. I could barely believe my eyes. 😍 They had the hardware to hang the corbels securely and now we don’t have to worry about the bar top collapsing due to too much weight.
Bit by bit, our kitchen is coming together and I’m loving the progress. Sometime in the near future, I’d like to find some bar stools to complete this bar area. I’m excited to host friends and family here at this space! It’s truly turning into the kitchen of my dreams and it has been so fun looking at all of the work pay off one project at a time.
Thank you all for stopping by the blog today and following along on our home building journey. It truly means the world!

Hey girl! This is stunning! I am seriously in love with those corbels. We are painting our kitchen white this weekend, what color are your walls? They look perfect with your white cabinets.

Can you please tell me the color used on your shiplap and if it’s a close color to your cabinets? I know your cabinets are not painted but I have the same counters and we just installed shiplap and need a color to match those counters for shiplap and cabinets.

Hi Kelly,
We used “Pure White” by Sherwin Williams on our shiplap. Yes, its a pretty close color to our cabinets. Our cabinets are just a shinier finish (for ease of wiping spills etc) while the shiplap is a flat paint. I hope this helps!

I’m sorry, I’m unsure of the cabinet color. The cabinets came prepainted this way by our builder
