Never have I ever decorated for Thanksgiving. Are you as shocked as I am? In the past, I’ve just kept my fall decor around for Thanksgiving but this year I wanted to put together a simple and earthy tablescape.
The inspiration behind this table decorating: The painted leaf stoneware. I found these mini butter dishes at the Pittsburgh Vintage Market Days show in July and knew that they’d make such a cute addition to fall decor. Instantly, I loved the brown/rust color of the hand-painted stoneware. I have a thing for old dishes, if you weren’t aware.
Out of pure luck, I found an almost identical set of larger 9″ plates. They look like they could’ve been bought at the same place & time but they weren’t. Ahh, the thrill of thrifting. It never gets old.
To give another layer of interest, I stacked these two stoneware leaf pieces onto my scalloped white dishware. I love that this simple edge gives the place setting a bit more of a romantic feel without lots of color or pattern. Just the right layering piece!
To break up a bit of the the white-on-white action with the dishware, I placed a folded a plaid “napkin” in between each of the larger white dishes. Ok, confession time: This little napkin isn’t really a napkin at all. It’s a piece of pretty brown/rust plaid fabric that I cut and folded to look like a napkin. It’s our little secret, ok? It sure does look pretty and make that brown painted leaf on the center of the plates, “pop!” I’m ok with this work-around because I mean, do people even use fabric napkins at home anymore?
Now for the centerpiece. I’ve had this gorgeous cable knit runner stored away since last winter and decided to pull it out again for this simple Thanksgiving tablescape. I think this addition really brings some warmth to the table and keeps it from feeling too modern.
On top of the runner, I placed some wheat that I found for $5/bundle at a local antique shop. The $5 was well worth it. I love the natural element it brought the space by bringing a bit of the outside, in. I tried to place it in varying directions along the center of the knit runner so that no matter where you’re sitting at the table, you have some wheat coming in your direction.
Next up? Pumpkins. To me, it’s still totally acceptable to have pumpkins out until Thanksgiving. I opted for a few fresh white and muted orange pumpkins to keep the natural/neutral vibe consistent with the rest of the space.
To give the centerpiece some height, I stacked a few of the pumpkins. I also added in a set of vintage brass candlestick holders. I placed these sporadically on the runner and used some white candlesticks in them to mirror the white dishware. I’m loving the varying heights and dimension it gives this tablescape.
My first Thanksgiving tablescape: Complete. I’m thrilled with how it turned out! I hope it was helpful for me to walk through each step of the process so that you can get a glimpse at how you can create your own Thanksgiving tablescape using the techniques that work for me.
