If you’ve been here for even two minutes you have seen my love for all things “neutral”. The whites, creams, beiges, and greys are just what my eyes and heart tend to draw me toward. These colors remind me of home. Clean, cozy, warm and peaceful. I totally realize that I have a pretty specific color scheme in my home but what can I say? What you see is what you get…I am a neutral-loving, warm and cozy kinda gal for life ❤️
You might think using the same color palette to decorate your entire home makes things pretty simple but I would beg to differ. You see, decorating with similar palettes is actually super difficult. It’s hard to make a room look just right and not too, “blah”. I have become better at this over the years purely with practice and have realized that the secret to decorating with neutrals is…texture.
I have learned the importance of using different types of texture in my spaces to break up the colors. In my eyes, the texture of a room is just as important (if not more) than the colors you choose. This is the element that gives you the “feeling”. Is the couch you bought made of leather or linen? Both of these options are going to bring out a whole different vibe in your space. What do you want you space to say? How do you want it to feel? Choose the textures wisely.
I have been playing around with the textures in our master bedroom and I wanted to share my thought process on how I decorate using neutrals. The focal point in our bedroom is our old architectural salvage headboard that gives tons of texture. The chippy wooden piece serves as a great backdrop for all of the soft and fluffy elements going on underneath. I recommend starting with a base color, in this case it was our fresh white bedding. See that white ruffle along the edge? This adds interest without being too much. On top of this, I placed a warmer white chenille blanket that I found at an antique show for $15..it is huge and so comfy! I like fun detail on it, especially on the edges.
Ok peeps, this is where I like to have a little fun 😉 See this cozy chunky “greige” colored throw? I picked it up on my Target haul a few weeks ago and I love it because it is neutral but adds depth and contrast. I love how it played with this floral throw pillow that has hints of the same grey-beige color, whites, creams etc. This throw pillow really ties all of the pieces on the bed together. I added another element of “coziness” by using some knit pillows from Walmart. Can y’all believe that?! Walmart…don’t underestimate it. Anyways, these pillows tie together the white bedding and the texture on that chunky chunky greige throw blanket. So let’s recap. My recipe for decorating with neutrals?
-Pick a neutral base color (in my case the white bedding)
-Pick a fun piece that you are loving that has a few different neutral colors (floral pillow)
-Use one element that has a bit of a contrast to make the neutrals pop (chunky blanket)
-Keep layering using colors from that “fun piece” in step 2I hope this is particularly helpful if you are neutral-inspired gal, like me. Go through these steps and get your neutral decorating down pat, girlfriend! It makes my heart swell being able to share my passions and interests with all of you each week. Truly, I could talk neutrals and texture all day long so thanks for stickin’ with me 😘 Thank you thank you thank you for sharing in my antics!
