Have you seen the new home decor trend going around? Framed rug art. I’ve seen this unique take on wall decor at retailers like Target, West Elm and Lulu & Georgia. I thought I’d try my hand at making my own version of this trend and share the process with you guys. Let’s see how my DIY framed rug art turns out.
This is a pretty simple DIY project. Beginners, you’re in luck! Have an old rug and picture frame you aren’t using? This project will be free. I decided to use this vintage kilim rug pillow case (purchased off of Etsy years ago). Since I haven’t used this pillow case in awhile, I thought it would be better used on my wall than in storage. The earthy tones are just what I was looking for!
I grabbed this frame from Target that I thought would be great to use because of its size. I love that the frame is square and has lots of matting around the edge. You’ll need a frame with matting to make this project look right – or buy the matting separately if you’re using an old frame that doesn’t have any.
Next, I cut the rug into the desired shape. I think it’s best to cut the rug into the same shape as the frame you’re using. Since my frame is square, I cut the rug into a square – just a slightly smaller size than my frame to allow some matting to show around the edges.
I personally love the look of slightly frayed edges around the rug. Using my scissors, I gently frayed some of the edges to give a raw and imperfect look to the rug. I simply placed the rug on the center of the glass on the frame, placed the backing on top and viola! Project complete.
Later, I decided to paint the black picture frame. The black felt like a little too much contrast with the subtle colors and it was competing with the lines on the textile art. I used the color “Champlain” by Fusion Mineral Paint. It gave the perfect amount of contrast against the white frame matting without stealing the show from the art itself. Fusion Mineral Paint is my favorite, by the way!
I decided to hang this DIY framed rug art in our foyer. I’ve been slowly decorating this space and love how the art brings some of the elements together! To see what we used to have hanging on this wall, check out this blog post. It’s crazy how much the space has changed over the span of a few years!
I’d love to know what you think of this home decor art trend. Oh, and let me know if you decide to try it for yourself! Thanks so much for checking out the blog today. It means the world!
