Summer is officially here! We have taken advantage of the warm weather to tackle some outdoor projects & have made lots of progress. I’m excited to share that progress with you guys today. We now have a fully painted front porch with functioning ceiling fans!
This has been one of those projects we have put on the back-burner but I’m really happy we finally got around to it. We started by trimming out our porch ceiling using cedar boards. After a day’s work by my husband & dad, we were ready to start painting.
First, we used Valspar Season Plus exterior paint for the first two coats. The boards on our ceiling were a grey color with lots of grooves, so a few coats of primer were necessary. We wanted to be sure to prime properly before we topped them with the color we wanted. The Valspar exterior paint comes in an ultra-white color that we chose not to change since we were just using this as a primer. It was very bright though, so I knew I wanted to find a color that matched our siding for the last coat!
I was a bit overwhelmed with this part of the project because, as most of you know, there are SO many shades of white out there. Our siding is white but not an ultra white – it’s more of a soft warm white color. I bought a few paint samples and decided on the shade that looked the closest to our siding.
Next, We decided to paint our ceiling & trim work with Sherwin Williams “Alabaster”. This bright warm white matches our siding like a dream. After a coat of Alabaster, our porch was transformed. The white trim & ceiling made quite the impact! I love how the light color accentuates the height of the porch ceiling.
For the last step, we installed two ceiling fans. We went with these matte black indoor/outdoor ceiling fans. Eli hung these in about an hour & they added such a fun element to this painted front porch of ours.
I was able to style the space a bit by adding this deacon’s bench that I blogged about last year. I love how the black accents on the porch stand out against our white house. Next, we are hoping to add some post trim, a sidewalk & some landscaping to wrap up the front exterior of our home.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that home building is a process. It takes lots of patience & time. Our home is coming together just how I’ve dreamt it to and that makes all of the hard work so worth it.
I hope this blog post was helpful if you’re looking for some front porch inspiration. I can’t wait for all of the memories we will make in the years to come on this front porch of ours. Thanks for stopping by and seeing what we’ve been up to!
