Okay, I have a confession. Until this year, I hardly cared about the beauty products that I was putting on and into my body. In 2019, one of my goals was to be more aware of the harmful chemicals I expose myself to on the daily. I’m starting super small on this journey and taking it one step at a time in doing my research and making better choices.
A few friends mentioned an app that allows you to search or scan any (and I mean any) household item and see the chemicals/ingredients that are in the product. The app also rates the item on a scale of 1-10 based on how health-conscious it believes the product to be. One of the first things I scanned was my deodorant. To my surprise, it contained tons of added fragrance, petrolatum and aluminum. It ranked an 8 out of 10….not so great! After seeing the harmful chemicals in my deodorant, I thought this would be a good place to start. Thinking super small, remember?
I took to Instagram to ask recommendations for the best all-natural deodorant. I was shocked by all of the responses and noticed that there was about three that were consistantly being recommended. I thought this would be a perfect time to do a little trial of these top three deodorants and see which one I liked best. Hopefully this will help a person or two from having to buy multiple brands or wasting money!
Let me start by saying, I am not a terribly sweaty person. I sweat while working out or if I’m super hot. 99% of the time, sweating is a non-concern. I spent one week wearing each of the three deodorants that were most highly recommended: Native, Schmidt’s and Tom’s of Maine. Prior to testing the deodorants, I used 1 part apple cider vinegar and 1 part bentonite clay on my underarms. This was a detox mask that I used to get out all of those gucky chemicals prior to starting! I highly suggest doing this before making the switch. Please please know that these are purely my results. Everyones’ body will react differently with varying products.
During the first week of this little experiment, I used Native. I picked this up for $11.99 at Target in the scent Lavender & Rose. This rates at a “1” on the Think Dirty app (10 is the worst). Of the three deodorants, this was my absolute favorite scent. The scent wasn’t overwhelming but still powerful enough. It was super fresh and I love the packaging. Anyone else a sucker for cute branding!? That being said, this was also my least favorite deodorant of the three (and the most expensive). This option didn’t really work for me, at all. I found myself reapplying multiple times a day because I felt like I stunk. On the second day, I started having mild irritation and itchiness under my arms. No fun, ladies!
Next up was Toms! This one rates at a 3 on the Think Dirty app which wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for in a deodorant that was labeled as “all-natural”. Toms retails for $4.79 which is less than half of the amount of money that Native cost. I’m all about a good bargain! This option was the only one that didn’t look like a traditional deodorant. The product inside the stick is a gel-formula that goes on “wet”. I wasn’t a huge fan of the texture upon application. After wearing this one for a week I would say I was pretty satisfied. I don’t think I picked the best scent option since this one was a bit overwhelming for my liking. I do believe this wore off a bit towards the end of the day but not as badly as Native. I would say this is a great bargain option if you’re willing to carry your deodorant with you. Just in case!
The winner of my all-natural deodorant experiment!?
Schmidt’s! This was the deodorant that I wore on week two of my trial. Schmidt’s left me feeling the most protected and I never felt the need to reapply. The Schmidt’s natural deodorant in Jasmine Tea retails for $7.99 and get this…..it rates at a ZERO on the Think Dirty app! I was so happy to find out that the product that worked best for me was also the best option for my body, too. I do think I will try a new scent when this stick runs out but overall I loved this deodorant. This will definitely be the one I stay with in the future.
I had fun doing this little deodorant trial and finding a product that is better for my body! If you’re looking to make the switch to natural deodorants, be sure to do the detox I mentioned above and be aware that it might take your body a bit of time to get used to. I hope this blog post was helpful! Love you all for supporting all of my endeavors.

Yay!! Schnidt’s is my favorite, too! I haven’t tried the scent you used, but I am currently using lavender and sage and I like it, but my favorite so far is bergamot and lime – especially in the summer!! Glad you found one you love!

Thanks so much for that info! I wasn’t in love with the jasmine tea scent so I will give the bergamot and lime a try next 🙂
