When we were designing our home, I knew I wanted something a little more “custom” for our shower/bath area. The builders did such an amazing job with the tile work for our shower. We had planned to order a glass shower door to complete the space but I was hesitant on this decision. If I could avoid it, I didn’t want to maintain the upkeep of a glass shower door. I started thinking of a glass shower door alternative that could complete the space.
This shower was designed to have a glass shower door installed to the outside. The more I thought about it, the less I wanted one. I was putting off making a decision on the shower in our master bath because I knew I wanted to go another route than originally planned.
I’ve heard the horror stories of glass shower doors: They can be expensive, hard to clean, and somewhat of a pain. These are just a few reasons why we opted for a shower curtain instead of a door.
I ordered a white linen shower curtain from Restoration Hardware with a hotel-grade shower liner (from Amazon, found here!) that are both machine washable and amazing quality. We opted for the extra-tall shower curtain and liner since our ceilings are taller than standard. The extra length made all the difference in making a statement in this space!
I found this matte black shower curtain rod and simple circle curtain rings to complete the space. I love the simplicity of these options and how the black hardware flows together with our faucets and mirrors perfectly! (To see more info on these black DIY mirrors, check out this post!)
Since our shower was meant to have a door that sealed the whole way to the bottom, the shower “lip” at the base is not very tall. I was fearful we would have issues with water running over the ledge. The curtain liner we purchased has small weights at the bottom that keeps it inside the shower when in use. We’ve had no issues with water flowing outside of our shower.
I’m so excited that this little work-around was able to function for us. I love the added layer of texture the curtain brings, as well as, the contrast against our shower tile! This shower door alternative really worked well for us and we have no regrets in this design decision.
**2022 UPDATE: We have since updated this space a bit – to see it now, head to this blog post**

Thank you!! They are from HomeGoods 😊

Beautiful bathroom! Where did you find the tile in the shower? I love it!
sarah jane says
Hi Kim! Our modular building company actually installed it for us. I’m sorry, I’m not sure of the exact tile it is 🙁
Charlena says
Beautiful! So glad I found your blog. I have been putting off ordering a shower door. I definitely think I want curtains after seeing yours.
sarah jane says
Thank you! We have no regrets with it 🙂
Trawanna Davis says
Where did you get the shower curtains/liner

Where did you get your vanity? I love it

I did the same. I just had my tub taken out and made it a big shower. I knew I didn’t want glass doors because of it being high maintenance. Got the hookless shower curtains from BBB.
Your shower and the whole room looks beautiful. The mirrors add so much to the room. I love the rug you have and wondered where you got it. Thank you for sharing.
sarah jane says
Thank you so much!!
Jessica Cordiero-Martinez says
Love your shower! Tile, shower base with seat, and those curtains….perfection! Can you tell me the measurements of your shower? And is the acrylic shower base holding up well?
sarah jane says
It is holding up great! It is 54″ x 35″ x 31″ – hope that helps 🙂
Fran says
I LOVE this idea!!! I’m getting ready to remodel our master bath and I know that I wanted to make the shower larger but I just really don’t like the idea of a wall of glass and feeling so “exposed “, even though the bathroom door would be shut. ( I’m extremely modest.). Additionally, I have been caring for my elderly in laws and their shower door is just in the way. A curtain would work much better from a caregiver’s standpoint.!
sarah jane says
Thank you!! I’m so glad the blog post was helpful for you. We’re really happy with the decision 🙂
Diane McKeon says
Beautiful! I am seriously thinking of doing a curtain instead of a door in our upcoming remodel. Would you be so kind as to share the dimensions of your shower base AND the brand name of the shower base/pan? I have not seen any bases with a built in seat. Thank you
sarah jane says
Our shower base is by Clarion Everyday Luxury and it is 54″x 35″x 31″. Hope this helps!
Linda George says
Do you have problems with shower curtain “ blowing “ due to steam ? Is it weighted or something to keep it in place ?
sarah jane says
The curtain we currently have, has tiny weights at the bottom that hold it in place!
B L S says
You are so correct. Glass doors are beautiful, when they are new. But with time, hard water stains will make them look horrible. I refuse to polish a shower every day. I think your bathroom is beautiful. Shower curtain is the way to go. Also the acrylic base. You made wise decisions. Looks great.
sarah jane says
Thank you so much! We are happy with how things have held up 🙂
Katie says
Great post! I want to go the same way. I was wondering what shower base you used? Thanks!
sarah jane says
It’s by Clarion Everyday Luxury!
Terri says
I’m struggling with this decision in a vacation townhouse at the beach. I want more privacy than a glass door, but will it look cheap? Toilet and tub being converted to a walk-in shower are in a separate space than the vanity/sink.
sarah jane says
I don’t think it will look cheap! A cute shower curtain can look really nice
sarah says
I love the shower tile. Any chance you could share the name and grout color, along with where it can be purchased. Thank you.
sarah jane says
Thank you! Unfortunately, the shower tile came with our home directly from the modular company. Sorry I couldn’t help more!
Mary Ann says
Hello,
We are remodeling our bathroom and just came across your site and pictures of your bathroom-really beautiful. I read that you got your shower curtain from Restoration Hardware and wanted to know if you could share which shower curtain do you have. Also would you mind sharing where you got your rug in front of the shower?
sarah jane says
It is the Stonewashed Belgian Linen Shower Curtain – in white. The rug in front of our shower is from Target. Hope this helps!!
Kimberly Morton says
I love your decor taste ! I do interior decorating , we are currently remodeling interior & exterior of our home . Hopefully will be ready to move back in mid to end July .
Where sis you buy your bathroom rugs ?
sarah jane says
Thank you! The bathroom rug is from Target’s outdoor section 🙂
Karen says
So glad I saw this! We are in the process of building our in-law apartment, and we will have a walk-in shower. I have been debating whether or not to go with the “expected” glass door, or just have a shower curtain. The look I am going for is a Vintage Cottage vibe, and I have a beautiful shower curtain from my previous house that I just love. I think I needed the encouragement to go for what I truly love, and you have given me that. Love your bathroom!
sarah jane says
Oh yay! I’m so glad this post was helpful to you. We have no regrets with this decision 🙂
Kimberly Morton says
I came back to your blog tonight to see your shower curtain . We did a custom tile walk in shower and it’s beautiful, Going to order curtains tonight !
Linda says
LOVE This home and the ideas. Is it possible to order or view the shower inset where you used a curtain instead of glass doors? We’re in Arizona and working on a project that I would like to change.
Thank YOU
sarah jane says
Hi there! We ordered the base from our modular company but it is by Clarion Everyday Luxury. Maybe this could be ordered online 🙂 Hope this helps!
Mary Tognazzini says
I KNOW THIS IS AN OLDER POST BUT HOPE YPU ANSWER. WHERE DID YOU FIND A DEEPER SHOWER SEATED PAN OR DOES IT JUST LOOK DEEP. I HATE SHOWER DOORS.
sarah jane says
Our shower base is by Clarion Everyday Luxury and it is 54″x 35″x 31″. Hope this helps!
Tara Rusher says
This is beautiful! We too are putting in a tile shower and I’m not sure about the glass doors. May I ask where you ordered your acrylic base?
sarah jane says
We ordered it through our modular home company. Our shower base is by Clarion Everyday Luxury. Maybe it could be ordered online 🙂 Hope this helps!
Laorra says
I have found the stonewashed Belgium shower curtain on RH but they do not have ‘white’ but natural instead – is it possible your curtain was ‘natural’?
sarah jane says
Hi there! They must’ve sold out of white…ours is a very true white. Although “natural” would be beautiful, I’m sure!
Jana says
Just read your reasons why! Totally agree.
Wendy says
How do you keep your shower curtain inside the shower when the water is on? LOVE the shower!!! I hate glass showers too!
sarah jane says
Thank you! The shower curtain liner has little magnets at the bottom to hold it down while showering. Hope that helps 🙂
Dana says
OMG!! that is such a beautiful shower! where did you get the brick? I’m doing mine in a few weeks and I NEED that !!
sarah jane says
Our modular home builder installed it! I’m unsure of the brand

I love this bathroom! Can you tell me if that is just painted brick on the bath walls?
sarah jane says
Thank you! No, this is how the tile came when we purchased it 🙂
Julie says
Love the look. What’s the shower wall? Tile or a wall board.
sarah jane says
Tile
Stacye Dages says
Does water stay in the shower with the curtain and liner? I was always afraid I would have a ton of water on the floor after we showered if it were just a curtain.
sarah jane says
For us, yes. I bought a liner that has little weights at the bottom so that it stays in place. Hope this helps!
Stacye Dages says
Also, what flooring do you have there?
sarah jane says
Here is the link to the exact flooring:

We had completed the remodel of our bathroom this summer and your blog was the determining factor for us to choose to go with a fabric liner instead of a door. We are soooo happy we did, we love it. No water has gotten outside our shower, and the fabric is soft against the elbows in case you bump it while showering, and currently we have a brown fabric to highlight the bronze work in the shower but if we want to change it up next year to highlight the stone color, easy to re-decorate with a different color liner and curtain. Thank you very very much!!
sarah jane says
I am so happy to hear the blog post helped! We have no regrets in our decision, either. Thanks for this comment!
rachel says
your thoughts about a shower door are mine exactly, i cant make my husband understand , maybe your view will help him understand what i mean by wanting curtains instead of a shower door.
I would like to know what wall backing for the shower was used in the pictures. Much appreciated. thanks
sarah jane says
I’m sorry, I’m not exactly sure what our builder used. Hopefully your husband can get on board with the shower curtain idea – we have no regrets!
Amanda says
Hello! Where did you get your shower seat? Thanks so much!
sarah jane says
The brand is “Clarion Everyday Luxury” – our builder installed it!
Margaret says
This looks lovely! I’m thinking of going with the shower base and curtain combination in our new build. I’ve read here that the weights work well for keeping your curtain inside the base while the shower is in use, but can I ask what you do to dry it after the shower? Do you leave the curtain inside the base or do you drape it up over the base somehow? I live in a cooler climate, so I wouldn’t want the bottom of the shower curtain to stay damp for too long, but I also wouldn’t want to leave it dripping onto the floor. Thanks!
sarah jane says
I leave the curtain inside the base to dry!
Rob says
Hi,
we are doing a bathroom remodel and I also don’t want to do the shower door because it would require more maintenance. i was looking into acrylic shower pans but the curb or threshold height seem to be not that high and I am afraid water would could outside while showering. can i ask what the approximate height of your curb is?
sarah jane says
Hi there! Sure thing – the curb is slightly larger than 5 inches. Hope this helps!
Amy says
what brand of tile did you use?
sarah jane says
Our builder installed this prior to us moving in. I’m sorry, I’m unsure of the brand!
Kim L says
Is it possible that you can share what type of tile you used in the shower? I am currently having my bathroom redone and I am not sure what to request. Thank you
sarah jane says
I am not sure the exact name of it. Our modular home builder installed it!
Elken says
Sarah, where did you get your shower tray – what brand is it? I also want a shower curtain but am struggling to find shower tray with any lip.
Thanks, aellen
sarah jane says
The brand is “Clarion Everyday Luxury”
Deanna says
beautiful shower area and tile!
just wondered if you could tell me where you got your shower pan with seat?
also, can you say where you found that tile?
😄
thanks
sarah jane says
Our shower base is by Clarion Everyday Luxury and it is 54″x 35″x 31″. I am not sure what brand/name the tile is. Our modular home company installed that on their own. Thanks!
Susan says
I love this idea and that’s what I went with. I didn’t like the idea of glass door for safety reasons also. But keeping it clean was my number one concern and I have little great grandchildren here every day and they would touch everything 😔😔😁so thank you for this idea. Susan
sarah jane says
I’m happy this post was able to help in your decision making. Take care!
Gail H Bay says
Thank you for sharing these images!
I really love the shower curtain!
You purchased it from RH – right?
Did you also purchase the plastic shower curtain?
Does this image on your site include the plastic curtain? It is hard to see?
RH recommends the plastic curtain along with the PIPED COTTON SATEEN SHOWER CURTAIN
sarah jane says
Thank you! I purchased the curtain from RH and the liner from Amazon (they make tons of sizes!)
Nika says
Looks like a great solution. Where did you find the base of the shower? The part with the drain and bench and lip. Thank you!
Nika
sarah jane says
Hi Nika!
The shower base is by Clarion Everyday Luxury
Amy says
What’s that stone called
sarah jane says
I am unsure. It was installed by our modular home company before we moved in.
Cheri Kennedy says
Love your comments on using a curtain vs glass doors in the shower. I’ve had many “questions” on my decision to opt out of glass doors with my new walk in shower and agree with your reasons too. I also love the decorating flexibility and comfort of a curtain in a small bathroom space.
sarah jane says
I agree! Our bathroom isn’t the biggest and I love how cozy the curtain makes the space feel. Being able to switch up the curtain is a nice option too. Glad I’m not the only one with this thinking!
